Sending a message
When you are subscribed to a list, you receive all messages sent to it by addresses allowed to post. If the list configuration allows you can reply to those messages or send some yourself.
NOTE: some lists are for announcements only - you may not post to the list in reply.
Sending a message with an email client
To send a new message: from your email client or a web-based email, send a message to the list address. This address consists of the list name followed by the suffix '@listsdev.hbs.edu' (example: trees(@)listsdev.hbs.edu).
Be careful: you need to send the message from the address with which you subscribed to the list, otherwise, your message might be rejected.
Replying to a message
To reply to a message sent to a list, do as for any message that would have been sent to you in private. Be aware of the difference between hitting REPLY and REPLY ALL:
- REPLY will reply to the person who posted the message. If jdoe(@)hbs.edu sends a post to the list trees(@)lists.hbs.edu, which you receive as a subscriber of trees(@)lists.hbs.edu, single REPLY will send your response to jdoe(@)hbs.edu only.
- REPLY ALL will reply to the person who posted the message and to the list, thus to all subscribers (assuming the list allows subscriber posting - some do not). EXCEPT WHEN USING OUTLOOK INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER
- Currently due to a known Microsoft bug, using REPLY ALL in the installed Outlook client acts the same as single "REPLY": only the poster's address wil be in the TO field. You must manually type/paste the list address in the TO field to reply to the list. Microsoft will be rolling out a fix eventually, but cannot tell us when. REPLY ALL works as expected in OWA (Outlook accessed via a browser), and in all other tested mail clients, such as Gmail.
