Subscribing to mailing lists

NOTE: the majority of HBS Sympa lists only allow subscriber changes to be made by the list owner. If you receive a reply saying "You are not allowed to un/subscribe to this list" please contact the list owners to request assistance.

To attempt to subscribe yourself to a list:

  1. Choose the address with which you want to subscribe to the list.

    If you have an HBS.EDU email address it should be your choice. Choosing a non-HBS address will limit your interaction with this web interface as CAS/Duo authentication is required to log in.

  2. Send an email message to sympa@listsdev.hbs.edu from the address you want to subscribe to the list.

    Sympa is not a person but a mailing list management robot. It only responds to certain commands specifically formatted.

  3. In the subject line of your message, type in: subscribe nameofthelist (replace 'nameofthelist' by the name of the list you want to subscribe to - a subject line command to subscribe to the list trees@lists.hbs.edu would be subscribe trees.)
  4. Leave the message body blank.

After this, you will receive a message telling you whether your request was accepted or not: if subscription to the list is Closed, your request will be rejected automatically - no human will see your request. You can send a message directly to the list owner (nameofthelist-request@listsdev.hbs.edu) to explain why you want to be subscribed to their list.

If your request is accepted, the message you receive confirms your subscription to the list.

You should keep your subscription notice: you may need it later to remember you subscribed or to send a precise command to Sympa (example: signoff command).

To be reminded of your list subscriptions, send an email message to sympa@listsdev.hbs.edu from the address whose subscriptions you want to check. In the Subject line type WHICH.

You can also attempt to subscribe to a list through the mailing list web interface. To do that, do as follows:

  1. Go to the list environment homepage and log on. NOTE: only HBS.EDU accounts that use CAS/Duo login security may log on.
  2. Go to the information page of the list you want to subscribe to (IF it is visible to you - some lists may not be).
  3. In the left menu, click on the 'Subscribe' link.
  4. Again, if the list doesn't allow self-subscription, your request will be rejected automatically - no human will see your request. You can send a message directly to the list owner (nameofthelist-request@) to explain why you want to be subscribed to their list.
